Where is Sri Lanka situated ?

Sri Lanka is an island in South Asia located about 32 Km off the southern cost of India. 880 km North of the equator in the Indian Ocean. 12 hours flying time from Europe.

Are Credit Card and Debit cards accepted ?

Yes! Many Hotels, restaurants and shops accept major credit cards. Debit cards are not accepted in shops but you can withdraw money from Debit cards with the logos of Cirrus, Maestro and Visa Electron.

What time do the banks close?

All Banks are open from 09:00 hrs to 13:00 hrs Monday to Friday. Some city banks are open till 15:00 hrs and some banks have the night banking facility.Banks are closed on Saturdays, Sundays, on public and special bank holidays.

What are the customs formalities ?

You are required to take back cameras and photographic equipments you have declared on arrival. Although the custom check is oral random examinations of baggage’s can happen.

What language to use ?

English is widely used, but official languages are Sinhala and Tamil.

How about International Direct Dial (IDD) facilities ?

IDD facility is readily available through the hotels and restaurants. IDD facility is available in roadside public payphones.

What are the prohibited items to export / import ?

Living plants, reptiles and living animals Ivory, antiques are prohibited. .Precious stones could be carried with a permit.

What is the currency used In Sri Lanka ?

Sri Lanka uses a decimal currency system. It is called Sri Lanka rupee. You can obtain the notes of Rs. 10/-, Rs. 20/-, Rs. 50/-, Rs. 100/-, Rs. 200/-, Rs. 500/-, Rs. 1000/-, Rs. 2000/- and coins of 10 rupee,5 rupee, 1 rupee,50 cents, 25 cents, 10 cents & 5 cents as well.
