Sri Lanka is a country with rich cultural heritage which has led to many cultural events throughout the year.Following is a breakup of such events with the relevant month.
January (Duruthu) :
The major Cultural event of this month is the “Duruthu Perehara” which is conducted by the temple of Keleniya. The second important event of this month (January 14th ) is the Thaipongal festival which is observed by Hindus.

February (Navam) :
Major highlight of this month is the Celebration of Sri Lanka’s independent from British on Feb 4 1948. Various cultural and religious activities are arrange to celebrate this throughout the country Another important cultural event held during this month is the “Navam Perehara” conducted by the Gangarama temple (Colombo). This is a colourful cultural and religious parade.

March (Madein) :
During this month Muslims celebrate the “haji festival “

April (Bak) :
During this month the major cultural festival is the celebration of “Sinhalese and Tamil new year” . This is a very colorful festival.

May (Vasak) :
During the month of may Buddhist celebrates the Vesak festival which is to mark the Lord Buddha’s birth, state of enlightenment and attained nibbna (Passed away). This day falls on the Vesak full moon poya day which UN has officially recognized as a holyday. Buddhist celebrates this day by observing relegios activities observing sil . The night of the Vesak poya day entire country is decorated with beautiful “ Vesak lantons” and decorations.

June (Poson) :
This is an important month to Sri Lankan Buddhist as long time ago Buddhism was introduced to Sri Lanka during one such month.

July (Esala) :
The major highlight of this month is the “Esala Perahara” of Kandy. This treated as one of the most colorful paget in the world. Many visitors all over the world visit Sri Lanka to see this event.

December (Unduvap) :
The important event of this month is the celebration of the Christmas. Sri Lankans celebrates this festival as grand as other cultural festivals.
